Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art, combat sport and self
defense system formed from Kodokan Judu. It eventually
evolved from an adaptation of Judo through Carlos and Helio
Gracie.
Since its inception in 1882, its parent art of judo was separated
from older systems of Japanese ju-jitsu by an important difference
that was passed on to Brazilian jiu-jitsu: it is not solely a
martial art, it is also a sport; a method for promoting physical
fitness and building character in young people; and, ultimately, a
way (Do) of life.
Rob Staples is the head Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructor at the
Jeresy branch of Gracie Barra Channel Islands and teaches all of
the BJJ classes, along with the help of some of the higher graded
students. The club offers structured lessons for all
abilities and welcomes visitors who wish to train with the
club.
Children can begin training from age 5 and become part of our
Future Championship which provides an environment which allows them
to experience and understand core values, including, focus,
discipline, persistence, co-opeartion and respect. All values
which we expect every member of our club to demonstrate.
Gracie Barra Future Champions Program was created to provide
children ages 5-15 with an environment that allows them to
experience and understand core values like focus, discipline,
persistence, cooperation and respect.
As a contact sport Gracie Barra Brazilian Jiu - Jitsu provides a
very challenging yet safe and caring environment for a child to
mature towards a real life champion.

Karate should more accurately be called 'Karate Do'. 'Do' means 'way' and 'Karate' means 'empty hand'. The translation of Karate Do, then, is 'the way of the empty hand'. When we talk of 'empty hand', we mean that combat is unarmed.
Karate is both mentally and physically demanding. No matter what your level of fitness, you will eventually encounter something that will make you work hard!!
We are a friendly and welcoming club and always ready to receive new members.
Within the school we run both Tsuyoishima Kai Karate and Kai-bo Fitness training.
Tsuyoishima Kai Karate has two types of classes: Cadets and Seniors
- Cadets start from age 7 and is the ideal sport for building self-confidence, balance, co-ordination, sportsmanship, discipline and courtesy whilst learning basic self-defence skills and martial art fundamentals
- Seniors is a traditional Karate class
Kai-bo is a fitness class taught by experienced Karate instructors. No two classes are the same and all exercises have variations making the class accessible to all.
Class Costs
Cadets £25 per month
Seniors £28 per month
Kai-bo £7 per lesson
Class Times (from 1st September 2020)
