Gotland Island Games 2017

 Gotland Island Games 2017

Duty manager Christina Blampied has just returned from a week at the recent Island Games as assistant swimming coach to the Jersey 12 strong party of swimmers. A great experience for both swimmers and coaches and although a young team all of them excelled themselves gaining personal bests in the pool and making finals for some who didn't expect too.

Swimming came away with 2 Golds, four Silvers and 1 Bronze medal to add to the Jersey's fourth place in the overall medal table. Christina had travelled to the previous Games in Gotland in 1999 and was keen to see any changes since the last Games.

"The atmosphere and reputation of the 'friendly Games' was evident throughout the 23 participating islands and I know that we all have made friends from many different sports and walks of life. The enthusiasm of all the athletes, officials and games volunteers shone through throughout the week. Following on from the very successful 2015 Games in Jersey Gotland did have a hard act to deliver, but using their culture, way of life and their own Games motto` memories for life' certainly did just that.

I was proud to represent Jersey in this capacity and in my role as Duty Manager at Les Quennevais also helped to assist the team in many ways. All this is encouraging for the next Games in Gibraltar in 2019 as a new 50 metre pool has been passed to be ready for the Games then which is very exciting, and hopefully many of the swimming team will strive to qualify and travel again.

My thanks to Rachel Sawyer and EDSTC for their support in allowing me to be part of such an event."
