Joe – Making Swimming Fun Through Play!
Meet Joe, one of our wonderful Swim School instructors at Les Quennevais!
“I’ve been teaching Swim School students for nearly four years. I currently teach stages 1, 2, 3, 4 and 8 – with stage 8 more focused on coaching and developing technique.
I work with children of all ages and really enjoy making their lessons fun, helping them learn through playful activities - it helps build trust and makes the lessons more enjoyable for them.
I love seeing the progress children make as they move through the Swim School stages – it’s so rewarding to watch them grow into brilliant swimmers.
Seeing children grow more confident in the water, learn what to do if they get into difficulty, and improve their swimming is fantastic – especially here in Jersey, where we’re surrounded by the sea.”
Meet Trish the Fish!
"As a young, inexperienced school leaver with limited qualifications, I began my career as a lifeguard. It was a role that unexpectedly pushed me into the deep end of teaching. As the most available candidate, I quickly found myself teaching a wide range of groups, from school classes and private lessons to clubs and disabled groups. While these roles required a depth of experience I didn't yet have, I embraced the challenge and emerged as a confident and passionate teacher.
I often reflect on that time, remembering the fear of learning that I carried with me, having only learned to swim myself at the age of fourteen. This personal journey is where my passion truly began. I can still recall the thrill of my first float—the mix of excitement and disbelief as I took my feet off the bottom and glided through the water.
I want every swimmer to experience that same sense of wonder. I see it almost every week: a child discovers they can float, or an adult overcomes a lifetime of fear to do the same. These small victories—the first jump, a successful dive, or even picking up an object from the bottom of the pool—are exciting milestones. Each one creates a palpable sense of accomplishment for them and fills me with immense pride.
Beyond these emotional breakthroughs, I am grateful for the opportunity to continually refine my technical knowledge. The slightest dip of a hand or a subtle change in leg action can dramatically affect a swimmer's stroke. The process of problem-solving and seeing those small adjustments lead to success is incredibly rewarding. Every aspect of teaching swimming has a "wow factor" that brings a great deal of satisfaction and professional pride."
Aly – Leading Our Aquatics Programme
Aly is our wonderful Aquatics Program Co-Ordinator.
"One of the most inspiring parts for a Swimming Instructor is watching someone grow from zero experience to confident swimmer, it’s not just a physical activity—it’s a life skill, a sport, a form of exercise, and sometimes a sheer pleasure. People swim for competition, fitness, rehabilitation, or even just to cool off on a hot day."
Annabelle – Helping Children Grow in Confidence
Our wonderful swim instructor Annabelle says: "I enjoy teaching swimming because it’s incredibly rewarding to see children improve. I get to work with kids of all ages, from little ones to teenagers, which helps me develop a range of techniques to keep everyone engaged. I especially enjoy working with children who are less confident in the water, as it challenges me to adapt my approach and find ways to make swimming more inclusive and less intimidating."
Josh – Teaching an Island Life Skill
“I enjoy teaching children to swim because it’s such an important life skill – especially living on an island, where being confident in the water is so valuable. It’s incredibly rewarding to watch their progression, from using armbands to swimming independently, and to see their confidence grow with every lesson.”
Jim – Supporting Every Swimmer’s Journey
"I enjoy being part of peoples' aquatic journey. Watching them get stronger, faster, swim further and conquer their goals repeatedly.
It gives me great satisfaction in knowing that I may have played a small part in guiding them, helping them achieve those goals, but ultimately it's their determination and hard work that ensures they reach their next milestone."
Tara – Guiding Adults to Achieve Their Goals
"Teaching adult beginners through to advanced/coaching is very rewarding, to see them progress, pushing through their fears and barriers. Their accomplishment is a personal achievement, which I am privileged to be a part of.”
Jan – Nurturing Swimmers from Swim Tots to Stage 3
“Having a career in childcare and a love of swimming it was a natural progression to become a swimming teacher. I love having the opportunity to get to know the pupils I teach. Gaining their trust and encouraging them to progress from wherever they are at.
At the moment I mainly teach in the small pool at Les Quennevais from Ducklings to Stage 3.
I am fortunate to be in the position where I’m able to also encourage babies and toddlers along with their parents or carers to develop a love for the water during our Swimtots sessions. This is all about learning to play and having fun. It’s lovely to meet so many little ones at the start of their swimming journey, who knows where it might lead. The main aim is to be safe and enjoy themselves.”
Aimee – 15 Years of Inspiring Swimmers
"For over 15 years I have been teaching swimming. It has allowed my love for swimming and joy of helping others come together. Swimming teaching is more than just teaching strokes, it’s about gaining confidence, trust and safety in the water, something of great importance when living on an island.
I enjoy creating a positive, fun and supportive environment where swimmers feel encouraged and proud of their progress. Every lesson is different, and I love the challenge of adapting my teaching to fit each student’s needs. Being part of their journey makes this job a rewarding experience."
Rob – Building Confidence, Stroke by Stroke
"I enjoy swim teaching because it allows me to make a positive impact on others by helping them build confidence and develop a life-saving skill.
Watching my students grow from being nervous in the water to swimming independently is very rewarding. I enjoy creating a fun and supportive environment where learning feels exciting rather than scary. Every student is different which keeps the job interesting and challenges me to adapt my teaching style.
Most of all I love seeing the smiles and sense of accomplishment om my students faces, it reminds me why I love what I do."
Carol – Creating Comfort and Safety in the Water
"Everybody should be able to experience the freeness you feel when you're in the water. I teach so people can feel comfortable, safe and develop swimming techniques so they get that chance."
Vanessa – Sharing a Lifelong Love of the Sea
"Having spent my life in and on the sea, I know how important being able to swim is. It is a life skill that everyone should be given the opportunity to have and I love watching peoples confidence and skills develop during swimming lessons."
