Matthew Jersey's Island Games Sqaush Team member

We’re very happy to support the Island Games Squash Team with their training for the Island Games taking place in Orkney in July. We spoke to Matthew, a member of the Jersey Squash team about his preparation for the upcoming games:

“A typical week involves 3 to 4 sessions on the squash court, focusing on routines, practice matches, and solo drills, complemented by 3 gym sessions targeting endurance, strength, and speed. Maintaining a balanced lifestyle with nutritious food and consistent sleep is also a key component of my preparation.”

“One of the challenges in preparing for a multi-sport event like the Island Games is peaking at the right time for the event and getting challenged physically and mentally during my practice in the same way I will get challenged at the Games.”

When asked about his favourite aspect of representing Jersey, Matthew said: "It's a pretty big squad compared to most teams going over to the games, so feeling the buzz of being a part of something bigger than your small squash team will be cool. I also hope to make the Jersey squash community proud!"

"The facilities at Active Jersey effectively supplement my training regimen, offering a comprehensive range of machines and equipment essential for my Island Games preparation."

Matthew’s advice for aspiring young athletes in Jersey: "Do not let the island's size be perceived as a limitation to achieving success in your chosen sport. Instead, get creative, train hard, seize opportunities, learn and find a way to succeed!"

What is Matthew most looking forward to about this year’s Island Games? “The festive atmosphere of the Games and going to a remote island I would never think of going to or be able to afford to go to on my own accord. Shout out to Axis Mason and CSP for their financial contributions to the squash team!”

Active Jersey is proud to support Matthew and the Island Games Squash Team in their journey to the 2025 Island Games. We wish the squash team and the entire Jersey team the very best!
