Mollie

We’re excited to support the Island Games Archery Team with their training for the Island Games taking place in Orkney in July. We spoke to Mollie, a member of the Jersey Archery team about her preparation for the upcoming games:

What does a typical week of training look like for you in the lead-up to the Island Games?

“In the lead-up to the Island Games, a typical week of training for me is quite structured and focused. I attend archery training most days to work on my technique and consistency. I also go to the Active Gym two to three times a week to build strength and improve overall fitness, along with one pool session to aid recovery and maintain flexibility. On top of individual training, we aim to train at least once a week as a team, shooting together to build teamwork, support each other, and simulate competition settings.”

What are some of the biggest challenges you face in preparing for the Island Games?

“One of the biggest challenges in preparing for a multi-sport event like the Island Games is staying consistent under pressure. Archery is such a mental sport, and the atmosphere at a large event can be very different from regular competitions. Whilst amazing to experience the atmosphere bought from teams rally together, managing nerves, staying focused, and sticking to my routine despite distractions is something I have to train for. Another challenge is balancing physical training with recovery, making sure I'm both physically and mentally prepared without overtraining is key.”

What's your favourite part about representing Jersey in the Island Games?

“My favourite part about representing Jersey in the Island Games is the incredible community it brings together. There’s something really special about the way the athletes are celebrated—walking in the parade, hearing the cheers and applause—it makes you feel proud, honoured, and part of something bigger than yourself and your sport. The friendships that form and the atmosphere of rallying around teammates and other islands to cheer them on is something truly unforgettable. It’s more than just a competition—it feels like being part of one big team.”

How does the support from Active Jersey make a difference to your training and preparation?

“As a full-time student and archer, the support from Active Jersey makes a huge difference to my training and preparation. Being able to access the gym, pool, and Active classes for free means I can train more consistently without worrying about the financial cost. It allows me to balance my studies and sport more effectively, knowing I have the facilities I need to stay fit, recover properly, and improve my performance. That kind of support really helps me stay focused on my goals and training without the worries of where and when I can train.”

What advice would you give to aspiring young athletes in Jersey?

“Stay committed and enjoy the journey. Progress takes time, and there will be ups and downs, but if you're passionate about your sport and willing to put in the effort, it’s all worth it. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, lean on your coaches and teammates, and take advantage of the support around you. Most importantly, believe in yourself, even when it’s tough, and remember why you started. That passion will carry you a long way.”

What are you most looking forward to about this year's Island Games?

“I’m most looking forward to about this year’s Island Games is reconnecting with friends from previous events and meeting new people from different islands. The sense of community is something really special!”

“My favourite part of the Games is the opening ceremony—it’s such an exciting and proud moment, walking out with your team, surrounded by energy and support. It really sets the tone for the week ahead and reminds you of how amazing it is to be part of something bigger than yourself.”
