We’re excited to support the Island Games Ladies Football Team as they prepare for this year’s Island Games, taking place in Orkney this July. As part of our continued commitment to local athletes, we caught up with Roisin Flynn, a dedicated member of the Ladies Football Team, to hear more about her training, challenges, and what it means to represent Jersey on the international stage:
What does a typical week of training look like for you in the lead-up to the Island Games?
"A typical week for me in the lead-up would be training Tuesdays and Thursdays and going to the gym on the other days."
What are some of the biggest challenges you face in preparing for a multi-sport event like the Island Games?
"With it being a big event both on and off field, we want to make sure we prepare for the physical challenges and also mental challenges that we may come across. It’s a long week of back-to-back games, so making sure we are all as fit as possible is a big priority."
What's your favourite part about representing Jersey in the Island Games?
"The squad! We are an extremely close group who thrive in each other’s company. We always prioritise encouragement and support, which makes me proud to represent Jersey."
How does the support from Active Jersey make a difference to your training and preparation?
"The support from Active is so helpful, especially as a university student. The gym being more accessible has allowed me to go to the gym more often and focus more on aspects such as muscle growth that I wouldn’t be able to solely focus on during training."
What advice would you give to aspiring young athletes in Jersey?
"To always stay positive. Although at times, things might seem like they are not going your way, they eventually will. It just takes patience and determination."
What are you most looking forward to about this year's Island Games?
"The team spirit throughout all the teams. At Guernsey’s Island Games in 2022, each team was buzzing with excitement during the opening ceremony which created the most exciting atmosphere. I can’t wait to see this year’s atmosphere and excitement for the competitions to come."

Best of luck to Roisin and the entire Ladies Football Team as they continue their journey to Orkney. We’re proud to play a part in helping Jersey’s athletes thrive, both on and off the pitch.
