We’re proud to support the Jersey Triathlon Team as they prepare for the upcoming Island Games in Orkney. We spoke with team member Wayne Quenault about how he’s getting ready to compete on the international stage:

What does a typical training week look like in the lead-up to the Games?

“Training for triathlon involves a lot of time and discipline across all three sports – swimming, cycling, and running – along with strength work. I usually train around 16 to 20 hours a week, mixing longer endurance sessions with shorter, high-intensity efforts. Each week typically includes 3 to 4 swims, 3 bike sessions, 3 to 4 runs, and 2 strength or yoga workouts to help with overall conditioning and injury prevention.”

What are the biggest challenges in preparing for a multi-sport event like the Island Games?

“Conditions play a big role. Weather and terrain can make or break a race, so training needs to replicate race day as closely as possible. If we’re expecting wind or rain, that affects equipment choices – such as using more stable wheels or dressing appropriately. For cold water swims, getting acclimatised beforehand is essential. Because anything can happen on the day, it’s important to be prepared with multiple race plans – A, B and C – so I can adapt to whatever comes my way.”

What’s your favourite part about representing Jersey?

“Competing in the Island Games has been one of my key goals since I started triathlon. Being selected to represent Jersey is a huge honour – it reflects the commitment, effort and passion I’ve given to the sport over the years.”

How has Active Jersey supported your preparation?

“Active has made a real difference – especially with consistent access to the pool for swim training all year round. The gym and sauna also play a big part in my training routine, helping with strength, recovery, and heat acclimatisation for warmer events.”

What advice would you give to young athletes in Jersey?

“Just give it a go! Sport is an amazing way to meet people, push your limits, and try something new. You never know where that first step might take you.”

What are you most looking forward to at this year’s Games?

“Being part of Team Jersey and soaking up the energy of the Games. I can’t wait to race, support my teammates, and experience everything the Island Games has to offer. It’s going to be something really special.”

Active Jersey is proud to support Wayne and the Triathlon Team as they prepare for the 2025 Island Games. We wish them and all of Team Jersey the very best!
