At Active, we believe that being active is about far more than physical fitness. It’s about confidence, routine, connection and wellbeing — values that sit at the heart of our long-standing partnership with Silkworth.

Silkworth provides vital support for people experiencing chemical dependency, offering residential treatment alongside a range of outreach services. Their work also extends into education, delivering programmes in schools and corporate organisations, as well as dedicated Family and Children’s Programmes.

We caught up with Jason Wyse, Chief Executive Officer of Silkworth, to find out why working together for wellbeing is such an important part of supporting people on their recovery journey — and how accessing Active’s facilities has made a positive difference for Silkworth clients over the past 15 years.

For those who may not be familiar, what does Silkworth do?

Silkworth provides support for people who experience chemical dependency through residential treatment and a range of outreach services. We also deliver education programmes in schools and corporate organisations, alongside a dedicated Family Programme and Children’s Programme.

How long has Silkworth been using Active’s services?

We have been lucky enough to utilise the services of Active for over 15 years.

How do your clients use Active’s facilities?

Our clients benefit from gym access twice a week. These sessions focus on light exercise, using cardio and fitness machines, and form part of our structured weekly programme.

What impact has access to Active had on your clients’ wellbeing?

For many of our clients, this is their first experience of being in a gym. Active provides a safe introduction to a gym environment, helping them to feel comfortable and challenge any fears or misconceptions they may have had about fitness spaces.

How does being active support your clients on their recovery journey?

Forming structure in our lives is a vital part of ongoing recovery. This includes work, activities or hobbies, exercise and anything that has a positive impact on wellbeing. By accessing Active as part of the treatment process at Silkworth Lodge, clients can discover a new interest — or re-establish a previous one — in health and fitness, which can then form part of that longer-term structure.

What feedback do you hear from clients after attending Active?

Our clients are continually grateful for the opportunity to engage in light exercise in an environment that feels different from the residential treatment setting. Many, especially those who have never been to a gym before, are surprised by how comfortable and relaxed they feel. The staff are always accommodating, courteous and available to help when needed.

How do you help clients feel confident when starting something new at Active?

Clients attend the gym as a group and are always accompanied by our staff, so there is support on hand at all times, alongside the Active team. If anyone feels they need to finish early, they can access the café on the ground floor, meaning there is never any pressure.

Has using Active helped clients feel part of a community?

Yes, absolutely. These visits form part of our weekly routine and help remind clients of ‘normal living’ and what is available within the local community that promotes healthy outcomes. The staff at Active help create that community feel and always ensure our clients feel welcome.

What advice would you give to another charity considering working with Active?

I would 100% recommend that colleagues in other charities explore what Active has to offer. It is inclusive, accommodating and well-equipped. The Active management team are supportive and do their best to meet the specific needs of charitable organisations.

How can Islanders support Silkworth?

Islanders can support us in a number of ways, from donating items to our Charity Shop to organising or taking part in fundraising events. We also have a donation page on our website, with details on how people can support us in the way that feels most comfortable for them.
