A few months ago, we shared Luc’s story as he prepared to step into the ring for a white-collar boxing event in support of mental health. After weeks of intense training, discipline and determination, fight night finally arrived.
The result? Not only did Luc achieve his goal of getting into the ring—he won his fight, and discovered a new level of confidence that continues to shape his life long after the final bell.
“It still gives me goosebumps”
Looking back on the experience, Luc has nothing but positive things to say.
“I still get goosebumps thinking about it,” he said. “All my hard work paid off. I never missed a training session, and I knew if I went out there and listened to my coaches, I’d be in good shape.”
The commitment required throughout his training camp was significant, but by the end of it, Luc felt stronger than ever. While the fight itself is now behind him, boxing remains a part of his routine. He still attends boxing classes and continues pad work with his coach, Dan, alongside maintaining an active lifestyle.
A night to remember
For many people, stepping into a boxing ring in front of hundreds of spectators would be terrifying. Surprisingly, Luc experienced something very different.
“I didn’t really feel nerves when my name was called,” he said. “I felt excited. It felt like everyone there was cheering for you and supporting you. It was surreal—I felt like I was in the UFC.”
With around 750 people in attendance, the atmosphere was electric. Although his nerves built as the fight drew closer, Luc relied on preparation to stay focused.
“I was listening to music, shadow boxing and trying to stay calm and composed. You can’t underestimate anyone—one punch can change everything. But I knew my coach believed in me.”
Once he stepped through the ropes, those nerves quickly disappeared.
“As soon as I got in the ring, the nerves went.”
Trusting the process
One of the things Luc is most proud of is how he approached the fight itself. Rather than chasing a knockout or getting carried away by the moment, he focused on listening to his coach and sticking to the game plan.
“My goal was to go the distance,” he explained. “I listened to my coach’s instructions and didn’t overthink things.”
That discipline paid off. Not only did he secure the win, but he was also awarded Fight of the Night and received countless compliments from people who attended.
“Winning was a massive bonus because that wasn’t my main goal,” he said. “Getting my hand raised was amazing, but winning Fight of the Night and hearing so many positive comments from people meant a lot.”
More than a boxing match
For Luc, the biggest victory happened outside the ring. The months of training, dedication and pushing himself beyond his comfort zone have had a lasting impact on his confidence and self-belief.
“It changed my life,” he said. “I’ve got more confidence now, I don’t doubt myself anymore and I’m happier.”
Seeing the pride on his family’s faces was another moment that will stay with him.
“I could see my Dad was so proud of me. My family’s support and encouragement meant so much.”
The experience reinforced something he had been proving to himself throughout training: that showing up consistently, even on the tough days, really does make a difference.
Respect after the final bell
After the fight, Luc’s first instinct wasn't to celebrate the victory. Instead, he shared a moment with the person who had stood across from him in the ring.
“I gave my friends a hug, then went to the changing rooms and spoke to my opponent. We celebrated together,” he said. “We’re both warriors. We put on a big show and should both be proud.”
It was a reminder that boxing is about more than winning and losing. It’s about respect, resilience and recognising the effort it takes simply to step into the ring.
“The relief and joy afterwards are hard to describe. The respect from everyone, including my opponent, was incredible. People I didn’t even know were coming up to congratulate me.”
Advice for anyone considering a boxing challenge
Having gone through the experience himself, Luc's advice is simple: commit to the process.
“Attend every training session on both the good days and the bad days,” he said. “It’s not about winning. It’s about showing up, listening to your coaches and improving.”
He also emphasises the importance of discipline, good nutrition and maintaining the right mindset.
“Never give up. Whether you win or lose, stepping into the ring is an achievement in itself. Pain first, glory later.”
What’s next?
Has Luc caught the boxing bug? While another fight isn't currently confirmed, he admits the experience has sparked bigger ambitions.
“Never say never,” he laughed. “Let’s see what 2027 holds. It would be a dream to get into the amateurs one day. I’d love to represent Jersey.”
For now, his focus has shifted to another challenge: the Jersey Marathon this October. If his boxing journey taught us anything, it's that Luc isn't afraid of hard work.
“I’ve proved by getting into the ring that I’m a fighter and I’m prepared for whatever comes at me.”
One thing is certain: this won't be the last challenge we see him take on!
