Luc Forster, a wonderful member of our Les Quennevais Sports Centre team, is preparing to take on his first boxing match on 23rd May to raise vital funds for Mind Jersey. We caught up with him to find out how his boxing journey is going:

What inspired the challenge?

Luc’s interest in boxing began back in 2020, sparked by the rise of influencer boxing and high‑profile fights such as Mike Tyson vs Roy Jones Jr. What started as curiosity quickly turned into passion.

“By 2021 I was hooked. I watch as many fights as I can,” Luc says.

His current favourite boxer is Chris Eubank Jr, whose style and mindset inspired Luc’s fighting nickname: “The Destroyer.” For Luc, the name symbolises readiness, determination and facing whatever comes his way when he steps into the ring on fight night.

Moments of respect within boxing culture have also shaped his outlook, including seeing Tyson Fury pay tribute to Ricky Hatton — a reminder that boxing is as much about character and resilience as it is about power.

Why Mind Jersey?

I chose to support Mind Jersey because I’ve experienced difficult times myself, and committing to boxing has really helped me. Without it, I don’t know where I’d be today. I wanted to raise funds for a charity that does such important work.

It’s great to have hobbies that keep you occupied when things are tough — they help keep your mind active. Don’t listen to people who say you can’t. Listen to the voice in your head that says you can.”

From marathon to match up

While this is Luc’s first ever boxing fight, he’s no stranger to pushing his limits. He previously completed the Manchester Marathon, which he describes as the hardest physical challenge he has faced so far.

“This will be my first boxing fight. The closest challenge I’ve done before was the Manchester Marathon, which is still the hardest thing I’ve ever done. At around 32km, that’s when it really started to hurt and people struggled. It taught me that pushing through and mental strength are a huge part of completing any challenge. Never hesitate — just keep going.”

Inside the training camp

Luc began his 10‑week training camp on 16th March, working closely with experienced coaches Daniel Du Four and Shemmy from Pro Form, who he credits as being incredibly supportive throughout the process.

“It’s been a great training camp with great coaches. They’ve helped push me out of my comfort zone while learning the fundamentals and techniques properly and safely, so we can give maximum effort on fight night.

Safety is a big priority because boxing is a dangerous sport. I’ve learned a huge amount already. I don’t know who my opponent is yet — that will be revealed closer to the fight.

I’m doing something every day to work towards the fight. Whether it be boxing sessions with coaches, cold plunge and breathwork, running, strength and conditioning or punching the bag at home, so I repeat what I’ve learned from my coaches. I spend time visualising the fight and keeping my mindset positive.”

Training for a fight isn’t always easy, but Luc stays motivated by focusing on progress rather than perfection.

“I don’t dwell on mistakes. I learn from them and keep practising. I know I’ll get better. The biggest challenge so far is stepping out of my comfort zone. Boxing is dangerous — you’re putting your body on the line. But I’m proud that I’ve committed fully and given it everything.”

For Luc, success isn’t just about the result, “It’s about knowing I left nothing on the table.”

Luc’s family and friends have been supportive — although understandably a little apprehensive — and their encouragement has helped him stay focused as fight night approaches.

Luc’s advice for anyone thinking about stepping out of their comfort zone for Charity:

“Think deeply about whether it’s something you really want to do. Learn the fundamentals and listen to the people helping you.

Anything can happen in a boxing fight — don’t underestimate your opponent. Stay positive, visualise the win and believe in yourself.

See it. Believe it. Achieve it.”
